Buffalo Museum of Science Workshops 2010-11

The Buffalo Museum of Science Presents a

Content Specific Workshop Series

For Educators

Classes Meet Wednesdays 4:00-7:00 at the Buffalo Museum of Science in the Connections Gallery

Teachers receive three hours of professional development credit per class.

Content With Your Content?  Are you interested in learning new ways to engage your students?  Using inquiry, your students will gain the tools they will need to pursue excellence and creative problem solving that they can apply to all areas of learning.  Join us on Wednesdays for topic based learning and recharge yourself with interactive ideas (and takeaways)!  Classes are for all grade levels, as content will be adaptable.

2010-2011 School Year:

October 20: Don’t Be a Drip, Properties of Water:  Investigate ways to bring water to “life” in your class.  Topics of density will also be included.  This class will meet at Tifft Nature Preserve.

November 17:  Meteorology:  What falls from the sky is as important as why it falls.  Join our own Buffalo Museum of Science staff meteorologist to learn about whether the weather matters.

January 19: Embryology:  Interested in raising chicks in your classroom, but would like to learn more about the process?  How can you teach this at all grade levels?  Delve deeper into embryology.

February 16:  What Did Your Lunch Cost? How do your choices impact our energy use and your body’s health?  Discover ways to begin a school-wide campaign and get kids (and their families) more in tune with how their food choices impact our economy and our earth.  This workshop is a continuation of last year’s Help!  I Have Idea Where My Food Comes From-but completion of Part 1 is not a requirement.

March 23:  Pollution: So they paved paradise and put up a parking lot?  How does this impact pollution levels?  Join us for an in depth look into your garbage and ways to get your school to go more green just in time for spring.

April 27:  Nano Technology:   Nanotechnology means working at super small scales, and is used to create super absorbent clothing, tough floor coverings, and dental materials.  Find out what the nano world has in store for you!

May 18: Evolution:  A touchy topic, but it doesn’t have to be uncomfortable.  Learn ways to engage your students in evolutionary concepts and activities and view museum collections.
