Summer Workshops from the NYS DEC

REINSTEIN WOODS OFFERING SUMMER WORKSHOPS FOR EDUCATORS

Summer Ecology School Offers Extended Study

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is offering summer workshops for teachers at Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center in the Town of Cheektowaga.  Each workshop provides teachers with activities designed to incorporate environ-mental education into their existing curriculum.

From July 13 to 15, teachers and youth leaders can learn how to connect their students to nature at “Summer Ecology School.”  The program provides educators of kindergarten to 8th grade students with hands-on activities designed to fit into existing curricula in science, math, English language arts and other subject areas.  This year’s sessions will focus on birds, energy, and using the outdoors as a learning environment. The program provides 15 hours of instruction for which in-service or continuing education credit may be available.  A “green building” field trip and information on Western New York resources available to teachers will be included. Participants will have planning time to incorporate their new knowledge into lessons for the upcoming school year.  A materials fee of $30 includes an eco-friendly lunch on the final day of the school.

Reinstein Woods is also offering several free three and six-hour workshops throughout the summer.  Each workshop offers interdisciplinary activities for teachers and youth leaders of students in kindergarten through 12th grade.  Participants in each workshop will receive a curriculum and activity guide that includes dozens of lesson plans for both indoor and outdoor activities. Activities are correlated to national and state learning standards.  Workshop attendees take part in sample activities, receive tips on managing a class in the outdoors, and receive additional resource materials related to the workshop’s topic.

Additionally, teachers and administrators can request that Reinstein Woods present a specific workshop at their school. More information about these workshops can be found on DEC’s website at http://www.dec.ny.gov/education/1913.html.

Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center is located at 93 Honorine Drive, off Como Park Boulevard, about three miles from the Walden Galleria mall.  To register for a workshop, or for more information, contact Reinstein Woods at (716) 683-5959.   A schedule of workshops is attached.
