Professional Development

PLEASE NOTE:

All courses are $10 and held at the BOCES Conference Center in Sanborn unless otherwise indicated. Payment is due 2 weeks prior to the course.

Checks can be made payable to Orleans/Niagara BOCES and sent to:

EACH participant is required to register with our office even if they also register with their district. Please indicate at time of registration who will be paying.

WE RECOMMEND YOU REGISTER WITH US BEFORE YOU BEGIN PROCESSING YOUR SCHOOL REQUESTS/FORMS because classes with less than 5 people WILL BE CANCELED.
We hope this process will allow us to get an accurate count for running the class.

Spring/Summer 2008
  • DATE CHANGE! Foldables for Organzation - July 28th, 9am-12pm. Hands-on graphic organizers are a great way to invigorate your content using brain-based learning strategies. Help students learn how to chunk and organize information.
  • Music in the Classroom - July 23rd, 1:30-3:30. Learn ways music can have an impact on your students and how to use it to inspire in the classroom.
  • Seasonal Make and Take BooksAugust 12th, 8:30am-2:30pm (Intended for primary educators)
  • More Books to GoAugust 13th, 8:30am-2:30pm (Intended for primary educators). Interactive make and take workshops where handmade books are created that are based on literary characters, topics, and individual needs.
  • Brain Gym Conference: Aug 18th-22nd Includes Brain Gym 101 Aug 18-20, Vision Circles Aug 18-20, and Optimal Brain Gym (201) Aug 21-22. MUST REGISTER BY AUGUST 7TH! (Geared towards primary educators)
  • The poembird Project - NEW! - July 22nd and 24th, 9:30-3:30. Develop a blueprint for using a book of poems to encourage students to apply forgiveness instead of violence. (MS/HS Educators)
  • Math Fractals/ChaosOct 18th, 8:30am-3pm. Learn hands-on activities for MS & HS classrooms on the exciting techniques of math chaos and fractals!
  • Mini-Grant Writing - Sept 24th, 4pm-7pm. Learn the essentials of grant writing, view examples of good grants and have a chance to start writing yours for the Teacher Center due October 17th!

Educational Technology Integration courses

As the name suggests the courses offered here are related to integrating technology into classrooms.

  • Adobe Photoshop - Lynn Bewley: July 7th -11th, 9am-12pm (Total of 15 hours). this class will take place at the Wilson High School.
  • iMovie and iDVD - Lynn Bewley: July 28th - August 1st, 9am-12pm (Total 15 hours). This class will take place at the Wilson High School.
  • NEW SMART Board Technologies - July 14th and 15th, 9am-12pm. Learn how to incorporate SMART board products and software into your everyday curriculum. Taught by MS teachers.
  • CPS "Clickers in the Classroom" - Beginning Level July 7th, 1:30-4:30; Advanced July 8th, 1:30-4:30. Learn basic and advanced operations of CPS and how to motivate and engage students using the clickers. Examview will also be shown.
  • Web 2.0 Tools Introduction - July 30th, 1:30-4:30. Wikis, blogs & Podcasts Overview: what are they, why would I use them, how will they improve my teaching and what are the issues?
  • Digital Photography & Image EditingJuly 15th, 8:30am-3pm or Sept 23rd and 25th, 4pm-7pm. Learn how to use your digital camera to take professional pictures that share a message or tell a story. Simple photo editing will be discussed. BRING your own camera.
  • Microsoft MovieMakerAugust 11th and 15th, 9am-12pm. Learn the basics of MovieMaker. the FREE software available to all Windows users. Sample movies will be utlized in the first class to learn editing adn then in the next, participants will bring their own footage.
  • Digital Photography Sept 23rd and 25th, 4pm-7pm
  • Teaching with Digital ImagesJuly 22nd, 8:30am-3pm or Sept 30th and Oct 2nd, 4pm-7pm. Learn how to incorporate digital images into your classroom curriculum. Based on the book by ISTE, these methods can be used in all subject areas.
  • Introduction to Podcasting - Oct 22nd and Dec 3rd, 4pm-7pm. this workshop will explain what a podcast is and teach you how to create them and use them in your classroom. 2 parts.
  • Blogging in the Classroom - Oct 28th, 4pm-7pm. Learn how to use blogs in the classroom to improve students' communication skills and enhance learning.
  • Blogging with Schoolwire (district specific) - Oct 28th, 4pm-7pm. Creating blogs using Schoolwire.
  • Digital Storytelling – TBA

Mentoring 911

We are pleased to provide a brand new mentor/mentee program. Whether you are looking for an already established and effective mentor training program; ideas on how to establish your own program; or ways to supplement your existing program than this is the solution for you!

  • Mentoring Workshop for MENTORS: August 12th-14th, 9am-3pm, FREE. This workshop will train mentors to work with new teachers in your district. It focuses on the the 4 Domains of: classroom management; instruction; planning and preparation; and professional responsibilities.
  • New Teacher Training: Classroom Management Sept 24th, 4pm-7pm; Great Lesson Design, Oct 15th, 4pm-7pm; Building Relationships with Parents, Nov 5th, 4pm-7pm. Come to one or all! All are FREE.

NYSUT/ELT Courses

Assessment for and of Student Learning (NYSUT grad course – part of Teacher Leadership Program), cost $645 for 3-hours graduate credit or $375 for in-service, August 18th-22nd, 8am-5pm (45 hours). Learn how to increase student motivation and learning through improved classroom assessment; learn the critical difference between assessment of learning and assessment for learning. SEE tuition grant program for partial reimbursement for in-service courses.

Differentiated Instruction (NYSUT grad course or in-service), cost $645 for 3-hours graduate credit or $375 for in-service, Oct 6th, Oct 8th, Oct 15th, Oct 20th, Oct 22nd, Oct 27th, Oct 29th, Nove 3rd, Nov 5th, Nov 10th, 4pm-8:30 pm (45 hours total). This course provides teachers with specific and practical approaches in topics such as: establishing clear and meaningful objectives; diversigying material and content; varying instructional approaches; and selecting appropriate assessments. SEE tuition grant program for partial reimbursement for in-service courses.

Summary of NYS Standards

NYS Teacher Centers pride themselves on providing professional development FOR teacher BY teachers. The ONTRaCT Center is conducts most staff development workshops after school, on Saturdays, and during the Summer, but occasionally we can provide instruction during the school day.

Our workshops include, but are not limited to, classes for the new teachers, workshops related to the new NYS Standards and Assessments, and classroom technology integration workshops.
